Diabetologist

What is Diabetology?

Diabetology is a branch of medicine focused on the study, diagnosis, and management of diabetes, particularly diabetes mellitus.

What Does a Diabetologist Do?

A diabetologist diagnoses and treats all forms of diabetes to help patients manage their condition effectively, maintain stable blood sugar levels, and enjoy a good quality of life. Their role includes:

Treatment Planning: Developing personalised treatment plans that may include medication, insulin therapy, and lifestyle modifications.

Patient Education: Teaching patients how to monitor blood sugar, manage their diet, exercise safely, and prevent complications.

Monitoring: Regularly checking blood glucose levels and other biochemical parameters and adjusting treatment as needed.

Preventing Complications: Helping patients reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications such as macrovascular complications (stroke and heart attack) and microvascular complications (chronic kidney disease, retinopathy, and peripheral vascular disease).

Support: Providing ongoing guidance, motivation, and support to help patients maintain a healthy lifestyle and good quality of life.

When Should You See a Diabetologist?

It is important to consult a diabetologist if you experience any of the following.

Experience Symptoms of Diabetes

Seek medical advice if you notice symptoms such as:

  • Increased thirst or frequent urination
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue or blurred vision
  • Frequent infections

These could indicate elevated blood sugar levels and require professional evaluation.

Have Abnormal Blood Test Results

Consult a diabetologist if your test results show any of the following:

  • Random blood glucose ≥ 11 mmol/L
  • Fasting blood glucose ≥ 7 mmol/L
  • HbA1c ≥ 6.5%

These values suggest diabetes and should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Are you at High Risk for Diabetes?

Consider seeing a diabetologist if you are at increased risk, for example if you:

  • Are overweight or obese (BMI > 25 kg/m²)
  • Have a family history of diabetes
  • Are physically inactive
  • Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Had gestational diabetes during pregnancy

Regular screening is recommended for individuals at high risk.

Need Support with Diabetes Management

If you are finding it challenging to manage your diabetes, a diabetologist can:

  • Develop a personalised treatment plan
  • Offer guidance on diet and exercise
  • Assist with insulin therapy if needed
  • Monitor your condition to prevent complications
